'The Hairy Thing'

As some of the long-time readers of this blog will know I've been working on a children's book for a few years now on-and-off.  With a little help from my brother as chief editor I finally got around to laying it out and sending it off to an interested agent who was full of praise for it.  Mostly.  As this point I'm not sure quite what to do with it bearing in mind I have other projects like 'The Absurd Balloon' I'm more interested in finishing.  So I may self-publish a few copies and try and get some feedback but in the meantime here are the first few pages.  Feedback positively encouraged.

'Daniel Plainview' WIP

I rewatched 'There Will Be Blood' at the cinema recently and was overwhelmed by the urge to draw Daniel Plainview; his crooked nose and bushy moustache were too much for me to resist.  Here is the illustration from initial pencil work through to inking the line-work and a final ink wash.  I've also included a vectorised image of the line-work, something I may use if I incorporate the illustration into a bigger design for screen-print.  Which I might; I'm really happy with it.

'The Jerk' illustration work-in-progress

Here are some progress pictures for a Steve Martin inspired exhibition I was asked to contribute to at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles but I couldn't find a US based screen-printers that could turn the prints around in time for the show.

As such I'll be either printing it myself or getting some giclees done soon.  It's inspired by the wonderful scene on the beach in 'The Jerk' with some added fantastical elements for good measure.  The illustration was quite frustrating to do and didn't really come together for me until I started layering up some colours and scanned paint textures in Photoshop but I'm really pleased with the final piece.  Apologies for the poor photos.

Bit of a prolonged silence there folks - sorry about that - I've been doing some exhibition installations the last couple of weeks hence no blogging.
